MDP cannot win 2028 election if internal conflicts persist and the party continues to operate in a spirit of retaliation: Moosa
Former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik has warned that the party will fail to secure victory in the 2028 elections if internal stability continues to deteriorate and members persist in acting out of a spirit of revenge. Emphasizing the need to strengthen the role of the elected National Council in decision-making processes, he stressed that the party must ensure equal opportunities for all members rather than prioritizing specific factions. Manik further called for an end to internal infighting, urging the leadership and general membership to work together cohesively.

Former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik has stated that the party cannot win the 2028 elections if its internal affairs continue to deteriorate to this extent and if members continue to act in a spirit of retaliation during internal elections.
Moosa made these remarks while speaking regarding the internal affairs of the MDP.
Moosa Manik stated that he has never before witnessed such a significant breakdown of internal harmony within an MDP election. He further noted that while the MDP has always advocated for the principle that the state and government should be led by elected officials, the same standard must apply to the party's internal positions, which should only be held by individuals elected by the general membership.
Speaking on the inclusion of specific individuals within the party leadership, Moosa stated that he sees no issue with working alongside figures such as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and President Mohamed Nasheed, given their experience as former Heads of State. However, he emphasized that if former chairpersons and other individuals are to be selected selectively, then the same opportunity must be extended to everyone across the board.
We have consistently maintained that both the state and the government must be administered by elected officials. The MDP has upheld this fundamental principle throughout its history, and it follows that the party’s internal leadership should also consist of elected individuals. I believe the current challenges we face stem from mistakes made during recent elections. The National Council is comprised of elected members; if those entrusted with leading a party of this magnitude are unable to engage in dialogue and reach consensus, it is a significant concern. When the Council fails to reach decisions, they resort to appointing a separate group of leaders. For instance, while it is appropriate to include former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed in such a leadership circle given their experience governing the country, the inclusion of others is problematic. If the party intends to appoint former chairpersons and various other individuals, then it should include everyone rather than being selective.Former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik
Moosa further noted that current developments have led general members to perceive the MDP as a party controlled by a specific group. He stated that the solution is to convene the party’s National Council immediately and reach decisions through consultations among its elected members. Moosa also emphasized that since the National Council consists of elected representatives, it is unacceptable to appoint additional leaders simply because the council is unable to make decisions.
Referring to the current internal turmoil within the party, Moosa stated that both factions appear to be acting out of a spirit of vengeance. He warned that if the party continues to operate in this manner, it will be unable to secure victory in the 2028 presidential election.
This demonstrates to the general membership that the MDP is controlled by a specific group of individuals. Instead, I believe the most appropriate course of action would be to convene the National Council immediately and allow its elected members to manage the party's affairs. I maintain that the National Council should strictly consist of representatives elected by the general members of the MDP. What we are currently witnessing is a spirit of retaliation from both sides. If we continue down this path, we will not be able to secure a victory in the 2028 election.Former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik
Overall, Moosa called for the party to conduct its internal elections without allowing room for infighting. He also highlighted the vital importance of working together in unity.
