Rights have eroded to the point where we must repeat the work done 20 to 30 years ago: Fayyaz
Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has expressed grave concern over the current administration's alleged erosion of fundamental rights and freedom of expression. Warning of a potential return to authoritarianism in the Maldives, he urged the public to remain vigilant in defending the democratic liberties previously secured.

Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has stated that fundamental rights have deteriorated to the point where the progress made 20 to 30 years ago must now be fought for all over again.
Speaking at the "Bodu Badhalu" rally held at Artificial Beach, Fayyaz stated that the current administration is systematically stripping away the rights of the people, one by one. He specifically highlighted that the freedom of speech and expression is being curtailed. Fayyaz further noted that the nation has now reached a point where it must confront a climate of fear.
"The Maldives provides the opportunity, through the freedom of the ballot box, for those who do not respect these rights to come to power. For various reasons, individuals with autocratic ambitions are able to reach the country's leadership. Our greatest responsibility now is to change that," Fayyaz said.
Fayyaz emphasized the need to remain vigilant in protecting the hard-won rights of the Maldivian people. He further noted that these rights were secured through the "Green Constitution," highlighting the extensive efforts undertaken by the MDP at the time to achieve those fundamental freedoms.
Fayyaz further stated that the Maldivian people are no longer demonstrating the same courage they once showed when fighting for their rights, noting that this is the current reality. He suggested that the primary reason for this lack of resolve is that, while living under the protection of those hard-won rights, people have forgotten the tyranny they previously endured. Fayyaz warned that the country is now once again heading toward that same path of oppression.
