22 percent of tourists visiting the Maldives spent their holidays in guesthouses

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism reveal that 22 percent of tourists who visited the Maldives so far this year opted to spend their holidays in guesthouses.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,461,682 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year. The majority of these visitors opted to spend their holidays at resorts, accounting for 73.5 percent of total arrivals, or 1,053,055 tourists.

Furthermore, the Maldives' local tourism sector saw 317,178 tourists staying in guesthouses, while hotels hosted 33,513 visitors. Additionally, 26,550 tourists visited the country via cruise lines.

China remains the leading source market for tourist arrivals to the Maldives, with 268,117 visitors recorded from the country. Russia follows in second place with 209,815 arrivals, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 110,983 tourists. Rounding out the top six are Italy, Germany, and neighboring India in sixth place.

Despite positive tourism statistics so far this year, the industry is facing significant challenges due to ongoing international developments. Specifically, the U.S. strikes against Iran on February 28 and the escalating conflict in the Middle East have caused major disruptions to international travel, leading to widespread flight cancellations and surging ticket prices. These factors have had a direct negative impact on the Maldivian tourism sector.
