MDP has awakened today; party's mindset is shifting: Mariya
Speaking at a rally to mobilize support for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s bid for the MDP chairmanship, Mariya Ahmed Didi emphasized that the current national climate demands an experienced leader at the party's helm rather than a younger successor. Highlighting a concerning decline in freedom of expression, she underscored the urgency of returning Nasheed to the party's top leadership to effectively challenge and bring about a change to President Dr. Muizzu’s administration.

Former MDP Chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that the party has now awakened and is showing signs of a shifting perspective.
He made these remarks while speaking at a gathering for the "Bodu Badhalu" (Great Change) campaign, which is aimed at garnering support for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s bid for the MDP chairmanship.
Mariya stated that while the party had previously faced a period of decline, it has now become more active once again. She noted that freedom of expression and other fundamental rights are currently being significantly eroded in the country, emphasizing that these issues can only be rectified if individuals with extensive experience take the helm of the party's leadership.
Mariya stated that unseating President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration will not be an easy task and can only be achieved if experienced individuals take up leadership roles within the party. She emphasized that key figures within the MDP must give this serious consideration.
Mariya described the general members of the MDP as individuals who are constantly striving to reform the nation. She stated that now is not the time to hand over the party's leadership to a young person, warning that the current situation is far too precarious.
"At this moment, the party's leadership requires President Nasheed. He is the figure capable of engaging the party and working alongside its general membership to achieve our goals," Mariya stated.
The election for the Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to take place on June 12.
