Former President Mohamed Nasheed has apologized to the members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for his decision to leave the party.
He issued the apology during a meeting with the residents of R. Dhuvaafaru on Friday, as part of his visit to the island for the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign.
During the meeting, a member of the public stated that Nasheed’s departure from the party was a mistake, noting that it had caused significant distress to both the general membership and the party itself. The individual further asserted that an apology was owed for the decision.
In response to these remarks, Nasheed stated that he did not wish to discuss the matter publicly, noting that "the more one digs, the more dirt one finds." Highlighting that leaving the MDP was a deeply painful decision for him, Nasheed remarked that the party had been his entire life. However, he asserted that no one had sacrificed more or endured more hardship within the party than he had.
Furthermore, Nasheed clarified the reasons behind his departure from the MDP leading up to the 2023 presidential election.
In this regard, Nasheed highlighted several key issues, including the breakdown in communication with then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih following the 2019 parliamentary elections and the subsequent events surrounding the assassination attempt against him. He also pointed to the internal disciplinary actions taken by the party against his closest allies, including then-Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla and Members of Parliament Hassan Latheef, Ali Azim, Mohamed Waheed, and Imthiyaz Fahmy.
Acknowledging that mistakes were made, Nasheed stated that he offers his apologies for those actions. However, President Nasheed also requested that members of the MDP seek his forgiveness in return. Furthermore, President Nasheed reiterated his call for MDP members to apologize to him. However, he did not specify the reasons why the party's membership should seek his apology.
