Area where construction of Baarah ring road commenced during previous administration, overgrown with wilderness

Former Deputy Minister Naushad has expressed growing public concern over the suspension of development projects initiated by the previous administration in Baarah, including the ring road and the Fenaka office building. He noted that despite funds being allocated in the budget, the lack of progress on the ground is resulting in the wastage of state resources and hindering the island's overall development.

Residents of HA. Baarah have expressed deep frustration as work on the island's ring road project, which commenced during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, has come to a standstill under the current government, leaving the site overgrown and neglected.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, Naushad Ibrahim, the MDP National Congress President for the Baarah constituency and former Deputy Minister of Education, expressed profound concern over the complete stagnation of development projects within the constituency.

Referring to Baarah, Naushad stated that although numerous development projects were undertaken during former President Solih's administration, all work has come to a standstill following the change in government.

He noted that work on the Fenaka office building has come to a standstill, despite the previous administration completing 80 percent of the project. Furthermore, he stated that while the island's residents are eager to see their roads developed to modern standards, work on this project has also stalled.

Naushad further stated that physical work on the Ring Road project had commenced during the previous administration. He noted that the road had been completely cleared and the leveling process with sand had been finalized. He also highlighted that the project was included in the 2024 budget, adding that assurances had been given that the work would proceed as planned.

Naushad stated that the residents of Baarah voted to elect President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with great expectations; however, they are now deeply disillusioned and disappointed.

It has been two and a half years since this administration took office, yet not a single thing has been accomplished. Absolutely nothing has been done at the site. The entire road has now become overgrown and reclaimed by wilderness once again. This is a massive loss. Public funds are simply being wasted.

He stated that despite making numerous pledges to secure office, the administration has failed to fulfill any of them. He further noted that the public is deeply concerned by the fact that projects initiated by the previous government have also been brought to a standstill.

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) announced on May 13, 2026, that it has commenced the surveying phase for a major project to upgrade the roads of Baarah to modern standards. However, similar survey work had also been conducted during the previous administration.

The government project, valued at over MVR 2 billion, has been awarded to RDC with a completion timeline of 1,280 days.

According to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), this project will involve the development and asphalt paving of the ring roads in Baarah.

Under the project, a total of 7.56 kilometers of roads are scheduled to be developed.
