President nominates Dhiyana for Maldives' Ambassador to Belgium and the EU

The Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee has begun reviewing the nomination of Geela Ali to serve as the Maldivian Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union. A former Attorney General and Secretary-General of SAARC, Geela currently serves as an Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This latest diplomatic appointment comes amid growing public criticism over the continued filling of political positions while the government simultaneously pledges to implement austerity measures to reduce state expenditure.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sought parliamentary approval to appoint Dhiyana Saeed as the Maldives' Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union.

The Secretary General of the People’s Majlis presented the matter submitted by President Muizzu during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting. The issue has since been forwarded to the Committee on Foreign Relations for further review.

Dhiyana has previously served as the Attorney General during President Nasheed's administration, as well as the Secretary-General of SAARC. Furthermore, she was appointed as an Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the current administration, serving alongside former ministers Adam Shareef Umar and Thoriq Ibrahim.

The public has noted that despite claiming to "right-size" the government, President Muizzu’s administration continues to appoint individuals to various positions under different designations.

MPL to be summoned to Parliament over vessel owners' losses due to North Harbor conditions

Complaints are mounting over the Maldives Ports Limited’s (MPL) new queuing system at the Male’ North Harbor, which has forced island-bound cargo vessels to wait up to 15 days to dock, significantly reducing the frequency of trips. This delay is causing substantial financial losses for vessel owners and disrupting the supply of goods to the atolls, prompting the Member of Parliament for Galolhu North to request that MPL officials be summoned before a parliamentary committee to find an urgent solution. Furthermore, the MP highlighted concerns regarding the lack of adequate services provided at the harbor despite the fees being charged.
