Kulhudhuffushi City Deputy Mayor Ahmed Abdulla has expressed concern over the City Council having to bear significant expenses for road maintenance despite the existence of a government Public Works unit. The Deputy Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, Ahmed Abdulla, has expressed concern over the government's wasteful spending and its failure to strengthen the operations of the city's Public Works Unit.
Deputy Mayor Abdulla expressed concern regarding this issue during the 6th general meeting of the Kulhudhuffushi City Council's fifth term.
During the meeting, Abdulla expressed concern that despite the government allocating a budget and maintaining a Public Works Unit in Kulhuduffushi City to address road issues, the administration has failed to carry out the work effectively. He noted that it is deeply troubling that the City Council is forced to utilize its own limited revenue to fund road repairs.
Abdulla highlighted that the government has been engaging in wasteful expenditure instead of prioritizing the strengthening of the Public Works Unit. He noted that rather than increasing the unit's resources and personnel, the administration has focused on other matters, neglecting issues that impose further hardships on the citizens.
Abdulla stated that the MVR one million currently budgeted for Kulhuduffushi City Council’s municipal workforce, combined with the council's total expenditure to date, represents funds that should ideally be allocated toward other developmental projects for the island. He further noted that the MVR 7.3 million currently under discussion within the total budget is a very insignificant amount.
Furthermore, Abdulla highlighted that the annual expenditure on "white-collar" administrative staff in Kulhudhuffushi City amounts to approximately 7 million MVR, a figure consistent with the budget allocations. He noted that if these funds were redirected toward the Public Works Unit instead of administrative overhead, it would effectively resolve the primary challenges facing the city.
If we had hired a group of young people to clean the streets with a salary of 25,000 Rufiyaa, the issues currently facing this city would have been resolved, making life much easier for the residents.Ahmed Abdulla, Deputy Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City
Abdulla further stated that despite the current situation, the government is incurring significant expenditures on initiatives that do not directly benefit the public. He expressed deep concern over the City Council being forced to utilize its own budget for tasks that should ideally be handled through central government mechanisms.
