Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif has expressed concern over the suspension of transport services following government amendments to the Decentralization Act. He further revealed plans to establish a dedicated platform aimed at driving progress and development for the residents of the atoll.
Mayor Athif made these remarks in a Facebook post addressing the suspension of transport services previously provided by atoll councils, following recent amendments to the Decentralization Act.
Mayor Athif highlighted that the government's narrow-mindedness and flawed policies have forced the public to bear the brunt of the consequences. He further noted that while atoll councils have been abolished, no alternative arrangements have been established to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of the services previously provided by those institutions.
Furthermore, Mayor Athif stated that the government has yet to determine the fate of businesses established to generate revenue for the atoll’s public fund. He also noted that funds and fixed assets held in the name of the atoll's residents were seized without any consultation or public input.
The Mayor stated that the government lacks a clear vision for organizing provincial administration. He further noted that the government has eliminated the sole remaining opportunity for islands to engage in consultation and collaborative efforts.
It is my vision to establish a platform dedicated to the advancement and progress of the atoll's residents. God willing, in the coming days, we will consult with the leaders of the atoll's islands to identify an effective framework to achieve this.Mayor Mohamed Athif
Mayor Athif further stated that he is fully confident that significant achievements can be secured for the citizens if all islands work together in cooperation.
