The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has reported an overwhelming response to its petition opposing the payment of service charges and salaries in Maldivian Rufiyaa, with employees from 42 resorts signing the document within a single day.
In a social media post, TEAM stated that the fact that employees from 42 resorts signed the petition within a single day demonstrates their unity and unwavering commitment to defending their income, rights, and livelihoods.
These properties include resorts of various service levels operating across the Maldives. TEAM stated that this is only the beginning, and they have called upon all resorts to participate in signing the petition.
The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) stated that the primary objective of this petition is to safeguard employee wages and ensure they receive fair compensation. Furthermore, the association has called on the government to halt proposed changes that would effectively end the practice of paying resort workers' salaries in US dollars.
The People's Majlis has decided to amend the Foreign Exchange Act to mandate that resort employees exchange 40 percent of their US dollar earnings into local currency through banks.
