Former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla has stated that the outcome of the vacant Hithadhoo North constituency by-election serves as a "blueprint" for how every seat lost by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will ultimately be decided.
Provisional results from Saturday's by-election for the North Hithadhoo constituency show that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe), has secured the seat.
In a post on X regarding the matter, Imran congratulated Sodiq on his victory. He further stated that President Muizzu and government officials must now realize that the North Hithadhoo by-election serves as a "carbon copy" of how every election will conclude for seats lost from the PNC parliamentary group, which he claimed the President is keeping shackled through legal constraints.
Ahmed Saeed (Soda) contested the election as the candidate for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
According to provisional results, MDP candidate Sodiq secured 1,337 votes across seven ballot boxes. Meanwhile, PNC candidate Saeed received 1,312 votes.
The seat for this constituency became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling on April 12, which declared that the incumbent member, Mohamed Sinan, no longer met the constitutional requirements for office. Sinan lost his seat due to an outstanding judgment debt related to a 5 million Rufiyaa loan from the Maldives Islamic Bank, which he had failed to repay in accordance with the court's verdict.
