President pledges new housing project amid stalled developments: "A major housing project will be launched to modernize Bandeyri Koshi area"
At the ceremony marking the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force, the President announced that the redevelopment of the Kalhuthukkala Koshi military base into a modern facility will commence within the next eight months. In addition to pledging to eliminate career advancement barriers, the President revealed plans to allow military personnel to serve in area commands closer to their home islands. Furthermore, the "School of Engineering and Logistics" was officially inaugurated during the event to enhance the technical capabilities of the armed forces.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to increase the number of military personnel eligible for basic housing under government schemes and announced plans for a major redevelopment project to modernize the Bandeyri Koshi residential complex.
He made these remarks while addressing the official ceremony held at Kalhuthukkala Koshi on Friday to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force. The President was accompanied at the ceremony by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
In his remarks at the ceremony, the President shared several planned initiatives aimed at the advancement and welfare of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Emphasizing that housing is a fundamental right for every Maldivian citizen, the President stated that military personnel must also be guaranteed this right. He further assured that the government would increase the number of service members receiving basic housing through its various national housing schemes.
The President stated that a special housing project will be undertaken to completely modernize the Bandeyri Koshi area. He expressed hope that practical work on the project will commence within approximately eight months at the latest.
We are planning to transform the entire Bandeyri Koshi area into a modern housing scheme. God willing, we expect current efforts to reach the practical implementation stage within this year. Our target is to commence physical work on this major housing project within the next eight months, or by early next year at the latest. Furthermore, the President pledged to further develop area command centers across various regions of the Maldives, ensuring that military personnel are provided the opportunity to serve in the same areas where their families reside.
Furthermore, the President announced that the current regulations imposing service limitations on military personnel based on their duration in a single rank would be amended. This change aims to ensure that loyal and dedicated officers can continue their service within the military without being forced into retirement due to existing time-in-rank constraints. Additionally, he pledged to establish a mechanism that allows every member of the armed forces to serve within the Area Command overseeing the region where their family resides.
The President presented medals and plaques of honor during the official ceremony held to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force.
Furthermore, the President officially inaugurated the School of Engineering and Logistics, established under the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Service Corps. Located in B. Kihaadhoo, the school serves as a dedicated center aimed at enhancing the technical skills and academic proficiency of military personnel.
A special prayer was also offered during the official ceremony held to commemorate the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Day is officially observed annually on the 21st of April.
