President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has unveiled details of an ambitious five-year national project aimed at fostering mutual respect. The initiative comes from a government that includes several high-ranking officials who were actively involved in numerous acts of civil disobedience and confrontational activities during their time in the opposition.
The government has decided to launch a major five-year national project following deliberations on a proposal submitted by the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage Heena Waleed, during a cabinet meeting held on September 6.

While the government has announced the formulation of a major project aimed at promoting mutual respect, it is noteworthy that those currently in the upper echelons of the administration were the same individuals who, while in the opposition, actively engaged in harassing and disrespecting various parties. These officials were at the forefront of using derogatory language, spreading misinformation, and mocking the top leadership of neighboring India.
Since assuming power, this administration has faced intense criticism after high-ranking officials at the ministerial level were found mocking and insulting the Indian Prime Minister, eventually leading to disciplinary action. However, as soon as the controversy subsided, the government reappointed those same individuals to prominent positions.
While the Cabinet's decision states that the President aims to restore the long-standing values of civility and moral conduct among Maldivians, it is noteworthy that President Muizzu himself was a prominent figure actively leading the "India Out" street protests.
The slogan for the national campaign to promote mutual respect has been established as "The Joy of Respect – The Benefit of Society."
It has been decided to establish a nine-member steering committee comprising experts in the field to oversee the project. This committee will include representatives from nine ministries as well as Public Service Media (PSM).
The committee, which consists of nine experienced professionals tasked with coordination, includes:
- Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage;
- Ministry of Defence and National Service;
- Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology
- Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises;
- Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development;
- Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments; and
- Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts.
It has been decided to designate an annual "National Day of Respect" to be observed at the national level. Furthermore, the date of the project's official launch has been set as the day this occasion will be commemorated each year.
