Heavy rainfall across the southern atolls has caused flooding in over 30 homes in Addu City, prompting the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to provide emergency temporary housing to a displaced family. In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged travelers to exercise extreme caution and strictly advised against seafaring while Orange Alerts are in effect.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that it is closely monitoring the situation in the Maldives' southern atolls, where heavy rainfall since Friday morning has caused varying degrees of damage. The affected areas include islands within Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City.

The NDMA stated that local councils, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the Police have launched a joint operation to drain floodwaters following heavy rainfall across Addu City. The Authority further noted that, according to reports received so far, more than 30 houses in the Feydhoo district of Addu City have sustained damage due to floodwaters entering the premises.

Furthermore, the NDMA stated that it has worked alongside the council to provide emergency shelter and essential relief to a family of eight, including two individuals with disabilities, after their home was flooded and rendered uninhabitable.

The NDMA stated that it is closely monitoring the situation in these atolls.

The Maldives Meteorological Service issued weather alerts on Friday, forecasting heavy rainfall and strong winds across much of the country, with a white alert for most regions and a yellow alert for the southern atolls.

Following these latest alerts, the Maldives Meteorological Service had previously issued an Orange Alert for Fuvahmulah City and Addu City, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with the potential for flooding.

MNDF has urged seafarers to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to safety protocols, as deteriorating weather conditions are expected to result in rough seas across the archipelago.

The MNDF has urged the public to check the latest weather updates before embarking on essential travel and to share trip details with the relevant authorities. Furthermore, mariners are strictly advised not to venture out to sea during periods when yellow or orange weather alerts have been issued.
