Sri Lankan media outlets have reported that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to undertake a state visit to the country this coming May to strengthen bilateral ties and hold discussions regarding cooperation in the fisheries sector.
According to Sri Lankan media reports, President Muizzu’s upcoming visit will focus on strengthening bilateral ties in the fisheries sector, with extensive discussions scheduled to take place. Reports indicate that preliminary talks are already underway, with the Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, recently meeting with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Fisheries, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, to discuss the matter.
The meeting, which was also attended by the Secretary of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Fisheries, Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, reportedly took place last Friday at the Sri Lankan Parliament Complex.
According to Sri Lankan media reports, the meeting focused on establishing a direct supply chain mechanism between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Extensive discussions were held on opening direct trade routes without intermediaries, a move expected to yield significant economic benefits for both nations.
Currently, several products manufactured in Sri Lanka are imported to the Maldives through intermediaries in third countries.
Furthermore, discussions were held regarding the launch of a specialized training program to share Maldivian pole-and-line fishing expertise with Sri Lankan fishermen. The talks also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Maldives' fresh fish resources and Sri Lanka’s expanding canning industry to introduce new products to the market.
Sri Lankan media outlets have reported that President Muizzu is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka. Similar reports of a planned visit surfaced in December last year; however, it was noted at the time that the trip had been rescheduled.
