Authorities have decided to temporarily close various sections of the Rasfannu area on the western side of Male' to facilitate the commencement of renovation work.
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure announced on Thursday that physical work to renovate Rasfannu is scheduled to begin this Friday.
In a public notice published in the Government Gazette, the Ministry stated that sections of Rasfannu will be temporarily closed as maintenance work progresses. The Ministry has urged the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when using the area during this period.
Although Rasfannu is under the jurisdiction of the Male' City Council, the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure revealed in February last year that the council had officially handed over the site's maintenance and renovation work to the Ministry. The area has remained largely unusable for an extended period due to severe coastal erosion. Furthermore, the pavilions and other facilities on-site have fallen into a state of disrepair and continue to deteriorate.
In February last year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed his concern over the deteriorating state of public spaces such as Rasfannu and Sultan Park. He pledged to renovate these areas and restore them to their former glory. Notably, both Rasfannu and Sultan Park were originally developed during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, while President Muizzu was serving as the Minister of Housing.
