The Male' City Council has refuted reports circulating in some media outlets, attributed to Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh, claiming that a 25 million Rufiyaa contract was awarded to install street nameplates in Male' and Villimale' without the council's approval. The council stated that these reports are categorically false.
In a press release issued Thursday, the Male' City Council clarified that the installation of street nameplates is a key initiative outlined in the Strategic Action Plan approved by the council in May 2021. The council further noted that the project was publicly tendered on October 7, 2023, drawing bids from seven interested parties. The contract was subsequently awarded to the highest-scoring bidder for a total value of MVR 3,988,290.06.
The City Council clarified that the MVR 25 million figure attributed to Deputy Mayor Areesh represents the total sum of bids submitted by seven different parties. The Council further noted that the project is not being carried out by awarding contracts to all seven companies.
The Male' City Council has expressed deep concern over Deputy Mayor Areesh's dissemination of false information, which the council claims has defamed both the institution and its staff. In an official statement, the council noted that if Areesh attended meetings diligently and participated more effectively in the council's work, he would have a clearer understanding of the actual proceedings and facts.
Furthermore, the Malé City Council’s statement emphasized the importance of news outlets verifying accurate information from reliable sources when reporting.
