Quorum cannot be established by members entering after a session has already been called off due to a lack of quorum: Azim

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim stated that a session cannot be considered to have met quorum if a member arrives after the meeting has already been adjourned. The Mayor noted that Tuesday’s ordinary general meeting was called off after waiting 17 minutes without reaching the required attendance, adding that Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh does not appear to understand how a quorum is established.

Male' City Council has issued a statement clarifying the cancellation of its general meeting due to a lack of quorum, following what it described as misleading claims posted on X by Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh. According to the Council's statement, the agenda for the official general meeting was finalized and shared with councilors at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 15, 2026. The meeting was subsequently scheduled for 9:30 AM today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The Council noted that a minimum of 10 members is required to meet the quorum.

The City Council stated that Tuesday's session was adjourned after the chair waited until 9:47 a.m. to meet the required quorum, which ultimately failed to materialize.

Regarding the matter, Mayor Adam Azim stated that Areesh is a councilor who consistently fails to attend meetings on time. He further noted that Areesh had missed five consecutive official meetings and had been untruthful regarding Tuesday's session. Azim clarified that a quorum cannot be considered met if a member arrives only after the meeting has already been officially called off due to the lack of a quorum.

The scheduled time was set for 9:30. After waiting for five minutes, and then extending that to 15 or 17 minutes when they failed to arrive by 9:30, I officially announced that a quorum had not been met. It was only after this announcement that someone finally entered. When individuals who lack even this basic level of understanding are appointed to positions of authority, it is the public that ultimately suffers the consequences.

Azim stated that the current state of the nation is a direct consequence of electing individuals affiliated with the PNC to public office. He argued that the country has gained nothing from electing a president from the PNC. Furthermore, he claimed that the entire nation has been thrown into turmoil. He specifically noted that the Muli Council has been destabilized due to the actions of Councilor Areesh and other PNC-affiliated councilors.
