The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has successfully conducted a door-to-door campaign event in the North Machchangolhi constituency as part of its activities for the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections.
Speaking during a door-to-door campaign event, Adam Azim—the opposition MDP candidate for the upcoming Male' mayoral election—asserted that the government has resorted to character assassination after realizing they cannot win the seat. Azim stated that government-aligned figures are working tirelessly to discredit the City Council by claiming it has failed to manage the city's affairs. He specifically noted that these individuals are continuously attempting to portray the condition of local mosques as being in a state of neglect.
However, the Mayor noted that the condition of the mosques was dire when he first assumed office. Azim stated that he had initially strengthened the maintenance of these sites by hiring Maldivians to oversee the work. Nevertheless, Azim highlighted that these efforts have since been hindered because the recruitment of local staff was subsequently blocked.
"A look at the track record will reveal who truly carried out this work. Those who frequent the mosques will witness their improved condition. Constructing and maintaining mosques is a high priority for the MDP," Azim said.
Participating in a door-to-door campaign activity on Saturday night, the MDP’s interim chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, stated that it is crucial for the public to reject the government in the upcoming local council elections. He further emphasized the importance of opposing the proposal to hold parliamentary and presidential elections simultaneously. He warned that failure to do so could result in the complete erosion of the people's power and influence.
Furthermore, the former Member of Parliament for the Alifushi constituency, Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, stated that the decentralization system was introduced by the MDP and remains a core initiative of the party. He further asserted that whenever any party other than the MDP gains control over this system, they further undermine and dismantle it. He emphasized that voting for the MDP in the upcoming local council elections is essential to uphold and sustain the empowerment of the decentralization system.
