The interim chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has stated that the government has resorted to desperate measures after realizing it faces defeat in the upcoming local council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections. He alleged that the administration is exerting undue influence on the public through employment threats and various other means.
He made these remarks while speaking at the MDP's "pickup" rally on Monday evening.
Ghafoor alleged that the government is disenfranchising voters by transferring individuals whose political loyalty is uncertain to other islands, effectively stripping them of their opportunity to vote. He further stated that the administration is exerting undue influence through intimidation and the promise of employment. According to Ghafoor, these tactics are being employed to mask public discontent arising from the government's failure to perform.
"The government has failed to initiate any new projects or achieve any significant progress. Consequently, they are unable to provide answers when questioned by the public. Instead, they are now attempting to mislead the people through various means," Ghafoor stated.
Speaking at an MDP campaign rally, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim, who is seeking re-election on the party's ticket, accused the government of misleading the public regarding salary increments for council employees. Azim claimed that the administration's current policies exclusively favor pay raises for high-ranking officials. Azim further asserted that the government’s actions are effectively resulting in pay cuts for civil servants across the Maldives. Highlighting what he described as the government's mistreatment of the general public, he stated that the administration has completely lost the people's trust.
