MDP alleged that the current administration’s decision to amend the constitution to allow the President to appoint the Chair and Vice-Chair of EC was a pre-planned move.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has alleged that the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has unauthorized access to ‘My Portal’, the official platform used by candidates to submit application forms for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, MDP’s Villingili Constituency President, Hussain Hassan, outlined the party’s ongoing efforts and raised multiple concerns related to the upcoming elections.
He noted that candidates are currently submitting their applications through the online portal and said that while the Elections Commission (EC) introduced the system with the intention of streamlining the process, it has instead created significant obstacles for the public.
Hussain further alleged that PNC is receiving candidate application forms and sensitive information submitted through EC’s ‘My Portal’, describing the matter as a serious issue. He claimed that the ruling party clearly has access to the system, adding that candidates whose information has allegedly been compromised have personally shared their concerns with MDP.
He also stated that as the election draws closer, a growing number of irregularities are emerging, which he believes illustrate the extent to which EC is facilitating advantages for PNC.
In addition to this, Hussain criticized EC President Mohamed Zahid, alleging that he held a secret meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 23 December 2025.
Hussain further argued that the current administration’s decision to amend the constitution to allow the President to appoint the Chair and Vice-Chair of EC was a pre-planned move. He claimed that the amendment was intended to enable Muizzu to exert undue influence over the electoral process.
