Khadheeja “Hajja” Mohamed has secured the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ticket for the North Machchangolhi constituency after defeating incumbent Malé City Councilor Mohamed Saif “Aiko” Fathih.
In the MDP primary elections held on Friday, Hajja won convincingly with 85 votes, while Aiko received 32 votes.
In the aftermath of the results, Aiko set aside campaign rivalry and congratulated Hajja on her victory, presenting what was described as an example of democratic sportsmanship.
Aiko was originally elected to the Malé City Council on an MDP ticket. However, amid internal disputes within the party, he later joined The Democrats before eventually returning to MDP along with others who had previously departed.
Following Friday’s primary, both former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed called on all MDP members to rally behind the successful candidates and work collectively to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
