MDP rolls out widespread primary vote on Friday as hundreds compete for Council, WDC tickets
Several candidates are contesting in the primary in an effort to secure the party’s ticket for the general elections, with more than 510 candidates competing for Local Council seats and over 190 candidates contesting positions on the Women’s Development Committees.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to conduct its primary elections on January 16 to select candidates for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
The voting process for the MDP Local Council and WDC primaries will take place on Friday beginning at 2:30pm and ending at 8pm.
Several candidates are contesting in the primary in an effort to secure the party’s ticket for the general elections, with more than 510 candidates competing for Local Council seats and over 190 candidates contesting positions on the Women’s Development Committees.
A total of 65 ballot boxes have been allocated for the primary election. Of these, 14 ballot boxes will be placed in Malé City for residents of other atolls, 17 ballot boxes will be assigned to Malé City constituencies, and 34 ballot boxes will be distributed across various islands outside the capital.
Within Malé City, ballot boxes will be distributed as follows: four boxes at Majeedhiyaa School, two at Galolhu Madharusaa, three at Iskandhar School, four at Hiriyaa School, one at Muhyiddin School, two at Ghazee School, and one at Kamil Didi School. In addition to this, the 14 ballot boxes designated for atoll residents living in Malé City will be stationed at Kalaafaanu School.
Across atolls, the highest number of ballot boxes will be located at the Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Education Center, specifically serving the Thinadhoo constituencies. Other major population centers will also host multiple ballot boxes, with three placed in the L. Gan constituency, two in Addu City, and one in S. Hulhudhoo. One ballot box will be set up in Fuvahmulah City, while two ballot boxes each will be allocated to Gaaf Dhaal and Gaaf Alif atolls.
