Saud clinches MDP mayoral ticket in closely contested Thinadhoo primary
Current Mayor Saud Ali defeated former Thinadhoo Council President Ahmed Naseer in the MDP primary with 462 votes to 417. The election proceeded peacefully, and MDP secured uncontested mayoral tickets in all cities except Malé and Thinadhoo. Party leadership emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among all members ahead of the April 4 local council elections.

Current Mayor Saud Ali has secured the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ticket to contest the Thinadhoo City Mayoral seat in the upcoming local council elections, following the party’s primary held on Friday.
The primary for the Thinadhoo City Mayoralty pitted the sitting Mayor, Saud Ali, against Ahmed Naseer, who previously served two terms as President of the Thinadhoo Council. RaajjeMV understands that Saud won with 462 votes, while Naseer received 417 votes.
An MDP member present at the polling station in Thinadhoo reported that the election proceeded smoothly and peacefully, with no incidents recorded. The announcement of the results was noted for its spirit of friendship and unity among participants.
With the exception of Malé City and Thinadhoo City, MDP tickets for mayoral positions in all other cities were uncontested, allowing the party to field the incumbent mayors for all other city council seats in the local council elections scheduled for April 4.
MDP’s leadership has urged all party members to work together in unison, emphasizing that support from candidates who were unsuccessful in the primary is crucial for victory in the general council elections. The leadership also highlighted that the primary illustrated the importance of solidarity and expressed hope that the cooperation demonstrated during a peaceful election will continue.
