Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration lacks genuine support for the country’s decentralization system.
Speaking in an interview with RaajjeMV after casting his vote in the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s primary for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, Solih said the Muizzu administration is not aligned with the principles of decentralization.
He further said the current government is unable to govern through the delegation of power and authority.
Solih stressed that MDP must make substantial efforts to reinforce the decentralized system and restore power to the people, while noting that the present administration is steadily consolidating authority at the center.
He also described MDP primary for the Local Council and WDC elections as the most free and fair such election held so far, calling it an important milestone for democracy.
Concluding his remarks, Solih said the primary reflects public empowerment and expressed hope that candidates who were unsuccessful would remain resilient and continue to stand united with MDP after the election.
