11 sites declared environmentally protected areas

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to declare 11 areas, in the northernmost atolls, as environmentally protected conservation areas.

The 11 sites are in:

  1. Gallandhoo, Haa Alifu
  2. Kelaa, Haa Alifu
  3. Bilehdhoo, Haa Alifu
  4. Finey, Haa Dhaalu
  5. Innafushi, Haa Dhaalu
  6. Bolissafaru, Shaviyani
  7. Naalahuraa, Shaviyani
  8. Fohdhipparu, Noonu
  9. Bodulhaimendhoo, Noonu
  10. Kendhikulhudhoo, Noonu
  11. Orimasthila, Noonu

They will be protected under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act.

The President’s Office said that the president the decision was reached as per the information provided by the Environmental Protection Agency and other environment experts.

It added that the decision has been shared with the relevant institutions and councils.

Protecting at least one island, one reef, and one wetland from each atoll is part of the president’s pledges.
