MP Ali Hussein has called for a demonstration against the destruction of Maldives’ historical sites, following government plans to demolish two mosques and a historic memorial.

Hussein expressed distain for this through a post on his official Twitter account to say that resistance to the decision needs to ‘move beyond’ social media.

“If we are not willing to protest then we are not willing to protect” the post said.

MP Ali Hussein post referred to another typed out in Dhivehi, which said that the sites were being demolished to create café and hotels as well as other commercial outlets.

The government had previously announced that it would demolish the ‘Bihuroazu’ mosque on Rahdhebaimagu of capital city Malé to make way for a 12-storey building.
