Significant Spending on National Day Celebrations Despite Independence Day Cost-Cutting
17 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ހޯމަ 17:14The government is facing widespread public criticism for spending heavily on National Day celebrations in Utheemu, despite official directives to cut costs due to the current economic situation. Concerns have been raised over the use of expensive air taxis when the island was accessible by speedboat from Hanimaadhoo, with reports indicating that the festivities cost over MVR 600,000. Although several Independence Day events were previously canceled to save funds, a large delegation of senior government officials and staff still participated in this high-cost trip.

Despite the government's claims of implementing austerity measures to address the nation's economic challenges, significant public funds have been spent to mark this year's National Day with grand celebrations.
The official ceremony to mark this year’s National Day was held on Saturday in Ha. Utheemu, attended by cabinet ministers and high-ranking government officials. In addition, a large number of civil servants and state-aligned media personnel were transported to Utheemu at the government's expense. The state covered all costs associated with the trip, including travel and catering for all participants.
According to reports, the delegation, which included senior government officials, traveled from Velana International Airport to Hanimaadhoo Airport before taking an air taxi from Hanimaadhoo to Utheemu. The decision to use an air taxi has drawn widespread public criticism, with many pointing out that the journey from Hanimaadhoo to Utheemu is easily accessible by speedboat. Critics argue that opting for the more expensive air taxi demonstrates the government's failure to prioritize cost-cutting measures.
Furthermore, a reliable source has revealed that the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Heritage spent over 600,000 Rufiyaa on National Day celebrations in Utheemu. However, Minister Heena did not provide a comment when questioned regarding the matter.
Despite significant spending on National Day festivities, several key events for this year's Independence Day, including the official reception, have been canceled under the guise of the government's cost-cutting policy.
