President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Ras Malé project, which was launched in 2023 with an initial pledge for completion within eight months, will be finalized this year.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, President Muizzu stated that the Ras Malé project had faced delays due to rising fuel prices and increased operational costs linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. However, the President confirmed that work on the project has now resumed and expressed confidence that the Ras Malé development will be completed by the end of this year.
President Muizzu stated that over 700 hectares of land have already been reclaimed for the Ras Malé project. The President further noted that work is currently underway to reclaim the remaining 400 hectares.
The Ras Malé project was initially suspended due to rising costs driven by the surge in global oil prices following the outbreak of war in the Middle East. However, the project has since resumed and has been progressing for some time now. The objective is to complete the Ras Malé reclamation project by the end of this year. Approximately 700 hectares have already been reclaimed, and work is currently underway on the remaining 400 hectares.President Muizzu
Noting that payments have now been settled with the contractors, President Muizzu stated that the reclamation of Giraavaru Falhu will be completed within the next two months.
President Muizzu has previously announced five separate deadlines for the completion of the Ras Malé land reclamation project. Most recently, in November 2023, President Muizzu stated that the reclamation of Ras Malé would be completed within five months.
Furthermore, President Muizzu stated in 2023 that the government would not have to incur any expenses for the Ras Malé reclamation project. However, it is estimated that over 100,000 Rufiyaa is being spent daily, even as dredging operations for Ras Malé remain at a standstill.
