"Nation first" drama: a hero in rhetoric, a traitor in action!

14 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ހުކުރު 23:34

The prioritization of political interests has jeopardized the nation's economy and sovereignty, forcing the citizens to endure significant hardships. Further, the expansion of political appointments in direct contradiction to pledges of fiscal austerity, coupled with the prevailing dollar shortage, has severely impacted daily life, continuously exposing the government's incompetence

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the National Flag | President's Office

One cannot help but wonder if the address delivered by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the National Day festivities, was anything more than an elaborate piece of political theater.

It appeared to be a staged spectacle engineered to capitalize on the public remembrance of sacrifices made by ancestors four hundred and 67 years ago, all while professing an unyielding commitment to protect the sovereignty and freedom of the country.

The president dedicated a significant portion of his remarks to praising the priceless contributions of historical champions who gave their lives to liberate the island nation from the cruel grip of Portuguese rule, the maritime invaders once termed the Sea Falcons.

He went on to argue that whenever the country lost its autonomy throughout history, internal traitors chasing selfish gains were to blame, calling upon the populace to renew their collective commitment so such painful episodes never repeat themselves in modern times.

Agony of the masses; betrayal of heritage

The bitter truth of the present moment stands in direct contradiction to those lofty sentiments.

The current leadership exhibits zero authentic regard for the fallen souls who shed their blood for local liberty, nor does it display any empathy for everyday citizens currently enduring profound misery and instability under the country's fragile circumstances.

Honoring the historical martyrs who gave their lives can never be accomplished through flowery oratory alone; it demands genuine loyalty to the very populace those ancestors fought to protect, alongside securing a stable path forward for coming generations.

Manufactured slogans masking selfish ambitions

Instead of honoring that legacy, the trajectory of President Muizzu's governance since taking office demonstrates a blatant disregard for past martyrs and modern citizens alike.

As the archipelago sinks under heavy external dependencies, mounting debt obligations, and a disintegrating economic system, the administration refuses to spare even a passing glance at the distress and daily tears shed by ordinary people.

Allowing the nation's independence and safety to hang in the balance simply to consolidate individual authority and advance factional political goals represents the ultimate disrespect to the ancestral fighters who died for the collective future.

It is nothing less than a calculated betrayal of the homeland. The patriotic motto championed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has degenerated into an empty instrument of deception, crafted solely to manipulate the electorate and feed an insatiable hunger for control.

Behind the curtains of sovereignty rhetoric

Proclamations about safeguarding territorial integrity and national self-determination have been reduced to hollow showmanship behind official lecterns.

Away from the spotlight, the primary objective is clearly the advancement of individual careers and factional dominance, steering the entire nation down a hazardous path.

The cynical maneuvers utilized by the president to capture high office, combined with the reality of his subsequent governance, paint an unmistakable picture of the profound damage inflicted upon the homeland.

Hypocritical reversal of foreign policy

Consider the blatant contradictions in the regime's geopolitical stance.

Having originally spearheaded aggressive campaigns and demonstrations against regional neighbors, cheapening the country's international standing and causing massive turbulence in foreign diplomacy, the administration now shamelessly begs for financial lifelines from the exact entities it previously agitated to cast out, driven into a corner by economic ruin.

There is no coherent logic in claiming to champion national autonomy while simultaneously surrendering the country's economic sovereignty to international creditors and debt traps.

Treating the country's destiny like a dispensable chip in a game of political survival is the exact opposite of what defines genuine national champions.

Broken pledges and bureaucratic excess

Solemn assurances to rein in state expenditures, cut down the sheer volume of political appointees, and stop the reckless draining of public resources have degraded into stale, laughable jokes.

As the national treasury sinks deeper under mountains of liabilities and the public is forced to shoulder the financial burden, the leadership does the exact opposite: squandering public money by continually multiplying government appointments solely to entrench its partisan grip.

Real cost of economic mismanagement

Meanwhile, the intensifying drought of foreign exchange has brought small and mid-sized enterprises to a grinding halt alongside the daily livelihoods of regular citizens.

The complete failure to honor policy commitments, coupled with an astronomical surge in parallel market currency rates, stands as the most damning proof of this administration's profound incompetence and neglect.

Self-interest disguised as patriotism

While the official banner preaches a homeland-first philosophy, every single observation confirms that the operative reality is exclusively self-serving and party-centric.

The pleasant rhetoric broadcast during National Day ceremonies clashes violently with the ruthless style of governance exercised behind closed doors.

Genuine devotion to the state requires upright, daily service and tangible actions completely divorced from political deceit and autocracy.

No matter how aggressively the state apparatus attempts to manufacture the image of a selfless protector, the discerning public sees clearly that the real threats to the homeland are the self-absorbed rulers who weaponize patriotic themes while deceiving the populace with fabricated commitments.

Victims of an incompetent administration

As the heavy burdens crushing the public, manifested through the foreign exchange crisis, widespread commercial bankruptcies, and an intolerable spike in everyday living expenses, grow undeniable, the ruling clique remains entirely preoccupied with accumulating private fortunes and power.

Every everyday person wrestling with financial distress and uncertainty under current conditions is a direct casualty of the government's total lack of integrity and competence.

Luring citizens with hollow promises simply to capture their ballots in the name of the motherland, only to abandon them once inside the halls of power, is not an act of devotion. It is an outright act of betrayal against the entire population.
