Maldives flies national flag at half-mast in mourning for the late former Emir of Qatar
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ordered the Maldivian national flag to be flown at half-mast from July 13 to 14 in mourning for the late former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This gesture serves as a tribute to the former Emir’s significant contributions and assistance to the Maldives, and President Muizzu has already departed for Qatar to personally attend the funeral and offer condolences.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared a day of national mourning following the passing of the former Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. As a mark of respect, the Maldivian national flag will be flown at half-mast for one day.
The President's Office has announced that the President has decided to fly the national flag at half-mast following the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The flag will be lowered from 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
The President stated that this decision was made in recognition of the long-standing ties of friendship between the Maldives and Qatar. He further highlighted the close relationship maintained by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani during his reign as the Emir of Qatar, expressing appreciation for his generous assistance and support toward the development and progress of the Maldives.
He was laid to rest with full state honors yesterday, July 12, 2026. President Muizzu departed for Qatar on Monday morning to attend the official mourning ceremony held in his honor.
