Member of the MDP Lawyers' Committee, Aik Ahmed Easa, has stated that the country is currently experiencing the inevitable consequences of electing a group of people to power whose only experience was packaging Panadol inside a political party office.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Aik stated that after being granted a parliamentary majority, the government’s first move was to interfere with the Constitution. He noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is working to restrict the most fundamental rights of the citizens. In this regard, Aik highlighted the passage of the Media Control Bill, the Gangs Bill, and several other questionable pieces of legislation.
Aik stated that the Maldivian public currently believes governments enact laws solely to restrict and control the people. He further asserted that laws enacted in violation of the Constitution should not be recognized as valid.
It is time for Maldivians to accept the reality. The people are now coming to realize that laws are by no means enacted for their sake or in their best interests. Instead, it is becoming clear that governments formulate these laws solely to restrain and control the citizenry.Aik Ahmed Easa, a member of the MDP’s legal committee.
Furthermore, Aik stated that the government is currently at a complete standstill, noting that while salaries were paid during the first two years, the administration is now failing to meet its payroll obligations. He emphasized that the government can only claim to be paying salaries if all employees, including those in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), receive their pay. He further highlighted that pension contributions for WAMCO employees have remained unpaid for over a year.
