Abdullah Sodiq, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate who won the North Hithadhoo constituency by-election, has been officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament.
Sodiq took his oath of office during a ceremony held on Monday, following which he attended the day's parliamentary sitting.
Presiding over the session, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced the move and congratulated the member. With this development, the number of MDP members currently in Parliament has increased to 13.
Ahmed Saeed (Soda) contested the by-election held on the 6th of this month as the candidate for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). While Sodiq secured 1,375 votes in the election, Ahmed Saeed received 1,313 votes.
The seat for this constituency became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling on April 12, which declared that the former Member of Parliament, Mohamed Sinan, no longer met the constitutional requirements for office. Sinan lost his seat due to an outstanding judgment debt related to a 5 million Rufiyaa loan from the Maldives Islamic Bank, which he had failed to repay in accordance with the court's original verdict.
