Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his gratitude to the members who voted for him in the election held to appoint the Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Provisional results from Friday’s election show former President Mohamed Nasheed securing a decisive victory by a significant margin. His sole opponent in the race was Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency.
In a post on X, President Nasheed expressed his gratitude to the members of the MDP and thanked the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign team. He stated that this was a significant victory for democracy and the reform movement in the Maldives. In the same post, he also extended his congratulations to Meekail.
Voting for the election took place on Friday from 2:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Although the deadline was extended twice, the polls were initially scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. The party had previously announced on Thursday that voting would be extended until 8:30 p.m. before the final adjustment was made.
On Friday, the party extended the voting deadline for a second time due to adverse weather conditions, which caused delays in the voting process at several polling stations. Consequently, polling continued until 9:00 p.m.
Both candidates conducted their election campaigns with intense rivalry and high momentum.
This election was held to appoint the seventh chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Following the resignation of former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, the position is currently being filled in an interim capacity by Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, the Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency.
