Parliament approves appointment of former Ministers Thoriq and Adam Shareef as Ambassadors
The Parliament of the Maldives today granted its approval for the appointment of Adam Shareef Umar as the Ambassador to Qatar and Thoriq Ibrahim as the Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Following the recommendation of the Committee on Foreign Relations, the appointments were passed with a significant majority during a floor vote. Both individuals, who previously served as cabinet ministers, currently hold the rank of Minister as Ambassadors-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Former Minister of Local Government Adam Shareef Umar and former Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim resigned from their cabinet posts at the direction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The Parliament has since granted approval for both individuals to be appointed as ambassadors. | raajjemv
The Parliament has granted approval for the appointment of Minister of Local Government Adam Shareef Umar and Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim as ambassadors, following their resignations at the request of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
During Monday's People's Majlis sitting, separate votes were held to grant parliamentary approval for the appointments of Adam Shareef Umar and Tariq as ambassadors.
In this regard, 57 members voted in favor of appointing Adam Shareef as the Maldivian Ambassador to Qatar, while 9 members voted against the appointment.
The appointment of Thoriq as the Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was approved with 57 members voting in favor, while 10 members voted against the nomination.
The matter was reviewed by the Parliament's Committee on Foreign Relations. The committee reached a unanimous decision to grant approval for both nominees.
Thoriq and Adam Shareef abruptly resigned on April 14, 2026. Following their resignation, both individuals were appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the ministerial level.
Although the government did not disclose the exact dates of their appointments, government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef confirmed on April 27, 2026, that both individuals have been appointed to the position of Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
