Former Villingili MP Saud Hussain has stated that citizens must exercise responsibility with their votes, warning that leaders will exploit the situation if the public fails to remain accountable.
Speaking at a special rally held Wednesday night to conclude the "Ithubaaru Campaign," Saud addressed the current state of democracy in the Maldives.
Saud stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is the only democratic party in the country and stands as its most robust institution. Noting that the party consistently prioritizes the rights of the nation and its citizens, Saud emphasized that any harm to the MDP directly results in adverse consequences for the entire Maldivian state and its people.
Furthermore, Saud emphasized that the right to vote is a power vested in the people, and citizens must exercise this responsibility with diligence. He warned that if the public fails to remain accountable, leaders will inevitably exploit the situation for their own advantage.
If citizens fail to be responsible, leaders in a democracy will exploit them and act unjustly. They will subjugate the people. In modern democracies, we are witnessing a trend where the lack of public accountability allows for policies that exploit and enslave the populace. Therefore, if we wish to uphold democracy, allow it to flourish, and achieve progress through it, the citizen must first and foremost be responsible. As we mark the 20th anniversary of the MDP today, I have only been with the party for a short period. However, my experience in political life remains extensive.Saud Hussain, the former Member of Parliament for the Villingili constituency.
Noting that the situation in the Maldives has evolved significantly, Saud emphasized that the party must undergo internal restructuring to adapt to these changes. He stated that the MDP has held power twice within the democratic system, highlighting that the party successfully governed the nation for a full five-year term.
Saud stated that no citizen questions why the MDP lost its bid for a second term. He further urged the public to remain mindful of these factors when casting their votes in the future.
