Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Congress member Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem) has stated that while President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu may believe a government can be sustained through theft and illicit financial gains, current events are proving otherwise.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Saleem sharply criticized the current administration's policies. He stated that leadership is entrusted to an individual with the expectation that the country be governed in accordance with the Constitution. However, he warned that citizens will not remain silent while the government bypasses constitutional bounds to act at its own whim. Saleem further alleged that upon securing a supermajority in Parliament, the government’s primary focus has been to amend the Constitution and systematically undermine the rule of law.
Citing international precedents, Saleem noted that leaders in other countries often resign following defeats in midterm elections. He emphasized that the public no longer wishes to support the current administration, adding that while President Muizzu claims there is no effective opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) continued electoral victories represent a significant failure for the government.
Furthermore, Saleem stated that the government's actions have led to a loss of public confidence. He also noted that the consequences of acting outside the legal framework would be bitter, adding that this is already becoming evident through the decisions made by the public.
"While it is being claimed that there is no opposition party, the opposition continues to win every election. Therefore, the President's remarks do not align with reality," said Maaz Saleem.
Furthermore, while discussing the internal administration of the MDP, Saleem noted the significant successes the party has achieved under the leadership of Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa. He also stated that several seats in the People's Majlis are likely to become vacant in the near future, expressing his confidence that the MDP will secure those seats.
