Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently contesting for the position of MDP Chairperson, has announced that he will not run in the upcoming presidential election, describing the presidency as a treacherous office.
During a meeting with the residents of Sh. Feydhoo as part of the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign, locals questioned whether he would be contesting the upcoming presidential election. The residents expressed that they do not trust anyone other than Nasheed, stating they do not believe any other candidate would act in the best interests of the people.
In response to these questions, Nasheed stated that he will not be contesting the upcoming presidential election. He emphasized the need to provide opportunities for the younger generation, adding that he would support candidates such as former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who has expressed interest in the presidency.
The presidency is an incredibly demanding responsibility, and by the end of a campaign, one is often left physically and mentally exhausted. I have already accomplished a great deal in my career; I have served as President, Speaker of Parliament, and as the Secretary-General of an international organization. I believe it is now time for the younger generation to step forward. For instance, individuals like Fayyaz are about six or seven years younger than me. I intend to remain by their side, providing support and guidance from the helm.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
Referring to a major systemic shift, Nasheed stated that a clear separation must be established between the government and the state. He continues to repeatedly urge the public to support this transition.
The presidency can be a treacherous position. We are advocating for a significant shift to separate the government from the state. The current concentration of absolute power within the presidency does not necessarily facilitate national development. Furthermore, our primary objective is to decentralize central authority and empower local islands. Our goal is to ensure that these powers are effectively transferred to the local communities.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
Despite stating that he will not contest the upcoming presidential election, Nasheed has expressed interest in becoming the head of state should the public support his proposal for significant constitutional reform.
