Nasheed warns of direct action if councils face continued obstruction
Former President Nasheed warned that legal action and direct protest would be taken if the government obstructs local councils' efforts to develop islands and increase public income. Emphasizing that the MDP’s objective is to improve lives through active council participation, he asserted that the current administration must grant councils this opportunity. Nasheed further pledged to identify challenges facing the decentralization system and work within the legal framework to overcome them.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that direct action will be taken if necessary should the work of local councils continue to be obstructed.
During the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign event held in HDh. Nolhivaranfaru on Monday, Nasheed spoke regarding the MDP’s vision for national development under its administration.
Nasheed stated that the income of Maldivian citizens must be increased and the living conditions of households must be improved.
Highlighting that the MDP is the party dedicated to working for the benefit of the people, Nasheed stated that the involvement of local councils is vital to these efforts and that all initiatives are being carried out in close collaboration with them.
However, he noted that the government has been frequently obstructing the council's work. He further stated that if these obstructions continue, they will resort to direct action or protests, and will also pursue legal action through the courts if necessary.
Local councils have frequently experienced interference from the central government, which often obstructs their administration and prevents them from executing their intended initiatives. Our immediate objective is to identify these specific barriers and determine the legal avenues available to overcome them. We are prepared to pursue litigation where necessary and engage in direct action, including protests, when required. Furthermore, it is essential to distinguish between what is achievable and the challenges that lie ahead. We must now commit ourselves to the difficult task of addressing these obstacles to ensure progress.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
Nasheed stated that development must reach the entire nation in a way that brings positive changes to the lives of the people, emphasizing that local councils must take an active role in this process. He further noted that these efforts should not wait for the formation of an MDP government, but rather that councils must work alongside the current administration to achieve these goals.
