Former President and leader of the People’s National Front (PNF), Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has called on voters in the Hithadhoo North by-election to withhold their support from the candidate representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). Instead, he urged constituents to cast their votes for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate.
Speaking at a gathering organized by the PNF, former President Yameen stated that if citizens wish to change the current state of the country, voting for the ruling PNC candidate is not the best course of action. He further noted that, given the present circumstances, casting a vote for the MDP candidate, Sodiq, would be the most appropriate choice among those contesting the seat.
President Yameen stated that he prefers the MDP candidate over the PNC candidate. He urged his supporters to vote for the MDP candidate as a means of expressing dissatisfaction with government policies and to change the country's direction, consistent with the approach taken in some previous elections.
President Yameen This appeal comes at a time of escalating tensions with the current administration, leading to collaborative efforts between the MDP and PNF to address these grievances. President Yameen, who has become a vocal critic of the PNC's policies, continues to emphasize that opposition forces must be strengthened within Parliament to ensure government accountability.
