Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it is crucial to develop the reclaimed area of Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll as expeditiously as possible.
In a video released following his visit to K. Guraidhoo and Maafushi as part of the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign, he stated that the benefits of tourism are reaching the people significantly, noting that both islands have established a formidable presence within the industry.
Referring to Maafushi, Nasheed described the island as a model for others, highlighting its significant growth in tourism. He further emphasized that developing the newly reclaimed area of the island is essential and noted that the project must be undertaken as a matter of urgency.
He therefore called upon the current administration to extend its cooperation and support toward those efforts.
Furthermore, Nasheed stated that Maafushi is facing significant challenges with its sewerage system and emphasized the need for an urgent solution to the issue.
The existing sewerage system here is fraught with numerous issues. It utilizes a vacuum system, a model that has proven problematic in many islands across the country. These challenges primarily stem from a lack of regular maintenance and the failure to repair pumps. Our objective is to find solutions to these issues in collaboration with the local council. God willing, under an MDP government, we will utilize our resources and authority to address and resolve these concerns.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
Nasheed stated that the next administration in the Maldives will be led by the MDP, and that his government will prioritize resolving issues directly impacting the public.
During the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, 25 hectares of land were reclaimed in Maafushi. This land was reclaimed as a separate area, designed to be connected to the main island via a bridge. The Maafushi Island Council previously stated that the new land would be developed to include all essential services and facilities typically found on an inhabited island. Furthermore, the council announced that 45 percent of the reclaimed land would be allocated for the issuance of residential land plots.
