Candidates or their designated representatives have signed the final voters' registry for the Hithadhoo North constituency by-election, scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The opportunity for authorized representatives to sign the candidate lists was open from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The signing process was conducted at the Elections Commission's Election Center.
The Elections Commission has announced that two candidates will contest the upcoming by-election scheduled for the 6th of next month. The contenders are Ahmed Saeed (Soda), the current councilor for the Hithadhoo Moolekede constituency, and Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe), the former Mayor of Addu City.
Between the two candidates, Soda represents the People's National Congress (PNC), while Sobe is the candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The Elections Commission confirmed that both candidates signed the final voters' registry for the constituency on Tuesday.
According to the final voters' list for the by-election, a total of 4,121 individuals are eligible to cast their ballots in the constituency. Information released by the Elections Commission indicates that seven polling stations will be established for the by-election, including five in Hithadhoo and two in Male'.
The representative for the Hithadhoo North constituency, Mohamed Sinan of the People’s National Congress (PNC), has lost his seat in Parliament following a ruling by the Supreme Court. The court declared the seat vacant after Sinan failed to comply with an October 2024 judgment ordering him to settle an outstanding debt. The case involved a 2.5 million Rufiyaa loan taken from Maldives Islamic Bank, which he had co-signed with another individual.
Sobe was the sole candidate to apply for the Hithadhoo North constituency seat under the MDP ticket after the party opened for nominations. In the PNC primary for the same seat, the contest was between Sinan and Soda. Although Sinan initially won the primary, he later withdrew his candidacy, leading the PNC to award the ticket to Soda.
