Maldives, Malaysia to Sign Defense, Islamic Affairs Agreements During PM’s Visit

The Malaysian High Commissioner to the Maldives has stated that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s two-day visit beginning on Monday, will pave the way for enhanced cooperation in trade and investment, education, tourism, defense, and Islamic affairs.
The Malaysian High Commissioner to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Badli Hisham Adam, informed Malaysian media that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s two-day visit, beginning today, marks his first official visit to the Maldives. The visit will primarily focus on strengthening existing bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.
The High Commissioner further stated that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will review the progress of bilateral relations and exchange views on key regional and international issues.
Briefing Malaysian media ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, Badli Hisham stated that the two leaders would reflect on their long-standing bilateral ties. He noted that discussions would focus on forging new partnerships across various sectors, particularly in trade and investment, education, tourism, defense, and Islamic affairs.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and President Muizzu are scheduled to attend a ceremony for the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and Islamic affairs.
Badli Hisham stated that this visit follows President Muizzu's official visit to Malaysia in April 2025. This visit is expected to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations and lay a solid foundation for a robust, future-oriented relationship.
As part of the visit, an official welcoming ceremony for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to be held at Republic Square. Following the ceremony, President Muizzu and the Prime Minister will hold a private meeting, which will be followed by official bilateral talks between the delegations of both countries.
Following these meetings, the two leaders are scheduled to hold a joint press conference. A key highlight of the visit will be the official luncheon hosted by President Muizzu in honor of the Prime Minister.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Maldives were established in 1968. Since then, both nations have remained committed to strengthening bilateral ties, enhancing economic cooperation, and fostering closer people-to-people connections.
The Maldives has emerged as Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner within the South Asian region for the year 2025. Additionally, the Maldives ranks sixth among the top destinations for Malaysian exports, with total bilateral trade between the two nations reaching USD 195 million.
Malaysian exports to the Maldives have reached USD 193 million, with petroleum products accounting for 31.6 percent of the total trade value.
The invitation for the Malaysian Prime Minister to visit the Maldives was extended during President Dr. Muizzu's official visit to Malaysia in April 2025.
