President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has dismissed rumors suggesting that a no-confidence motion is being sought against Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
During a press conference held at the President's Office on Monday, a journalist raised questions regarding remarks made by the former Male' Area Commander, Captain (Retd.) Ahmed Fayaz Ali Riza (Papa), at a PNF rally on May 28, 2026. The journalist highlighted allegations that there are plans to remove the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP, Ahmed Nazim, from his post, followed by a no-confidence motion in Parliament against Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef. The journalist then inquired about President Muizzu's response to these allegations.
In response to this question, President Muizzu stated that there is no truth to those allegations.
Noting that he had seen the video containing these allegations on social media, President Muizzu remarked that such individuals resemble the paid storytellers from the time of the Prophet. He further questioned whether the Maldives had regressed to such an era.
The rumors regarding the removal of Hussain Mohamed Latheef are of that same caliber. What exactly are they trying to create here? This is not even politics; it is not even dirty politics. This is politics on an entirely different level. Is this not desperation to the maximum? They are completely indifferent, even as they are being publicly disgraced for their blatant lies. Is this truly the level at which our nation's political arena currently stands?President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Emphasizing the importance of political parties engaging in the political arena with a sense of responsibility, President Muizzu reiterated his previous stance that the Maldives lacks a responsible opposition. He stated that the current opposition instead focuses on spreading baseless rhetoric and engaging in gossip.
Former high-ranking officials and those close to them are engaged in these activities day and night. Is this truly how things are meant to function in our country? I feel a deep sense of pity for the state of our political landscape. It is a certainty that we have no real opposition in this country. If an opposition is not responsible, it cannot be considered an opposition. There is no truth in what is being said, so there is nothing more to address. I find myself marveling at how someone can speak for 10 or 12 minutes without a single word of truth, all while maintaining a perfectly straight face; it requires a certain kind of talent. Yet, this is exactly what everyone in the opposition is doing. There are no exceptions; every single one of them is involved. Not one of them even considers telling the truth. And they are being emboldened by "gutter press" journalists who hide behind their media credentials.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Furthermore, President Muizzu stated that the false narratives spread by opposition politicians are being fueled by "gutter press" journalists who hide behind official media credentials.
