Member of Parliament for South Galolhu and candidate for the Chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has stated that one of the greatest concerns for Addu City is the cessation of political activities outside of election periods.
Speaking from his maternal home island of S. Hulhudhoo, Meekail shared a special message delivered in the Addu dialect. He shared the message while speaking to the press following a door-to-door campaign event held in Hulhudhoo as part of his ongoing visit to Addu City.
Meekail stated that door-to-door activities conducted in Meedhoo on Thursday and Hulhudhoo on Friday revealed a significant concern among Addu residents: the party's inactivity outside of election cycles. He pledged to work towards addressing this issue. He further noted that additional door-to-door campaigns are scheduled to take place across other islands in Addu City in the coming days.
Meekail has previously pledged that he will not allow MDP's activities in the atolls to become stagnant. During a recent press conference, he noted that general members have been expressing concerns regarding the slowdown of party activities across the atolls, emphasizing that this issue must be addressed. Meekail further stated that he would ensure a mechanism is established to keep MDP's activities active in Addu City, even in the absence of an upcoming election.
Highlighting the challenges faced in operating MDP centers across the islands, Meekail noted that party activities in some areas have come to a standstill due to a lack of adequate resources. He pledged to provide the necessary financial assistance to ensure these centers remain operational.
Meekail emphasized that significant changes must be made to the party's administration and overall approach, noting that these reforms will be implemented in consultation with the general membership. Discussing the party's future, Meekail stated that extensive efforts are required to increase youth representation within the MDP's membership.
Meekail has been advocating for the inclusion of younger faces within the party's leadership to achieve these objectives. He stated that his primary goal is to provide opportunities for those seeking a political future, while strengthening party administration and rebuilding the trust of its members.
Furthermore, Meekail stated that he would establish a system ensuring that general members and council members of the MDP have a meaningful voice in party affairs. He added that under his chairmanship, the path would be open for any member seeking to join the party's leadership ranks.
