The family of a patient admitted to the psychiatric ward at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has leveled serious allegations of negligence against the institution, claiming the patient managed to escape due to a lapse in oversight.
The family of the individual, who was undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder, has expressed their concerns on social media, alleging that the disappearance was a result of negligence by the hospital.
According to the family, the patient has been hospitalized at IGMH for over three weeks, yet the hospital lacks the necessary medication required to stabilize their condition. The family further noted that, at the hospital's request, they had to personally source and import the medication from abroad.
Providing further details regarding the incident, the family stated that hospital staff failed to take notice even after the patient had gone several days without sleep. The family further alleges that despite the patient wandering for more than three hours within a high-security locked ward, no staff member attempted to intervene or provide any assistance.
The family of a patient in critical condition has described the individual's disappearance from hospital custody as a total failure of the healthcare system. This incident occurred while the family was in the process of arranging medical evacuation abroad due to a loss of confidence in the local healthcare system. The family further asserted that the state must take full responsibility for the matter.
Efforts to obtain an official comment from IGMH regarding the matter were unsuccessful as the media official did not respond to calls. Consequently, it remains unclear whether the hospital is actively involved in the search for the missing patient. The family is currently conducting their own search for the individual. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked significant public concern and raised serious questions about how a patient could leave a secured ward unnoticed.
