Urban Primary Healthcare Centre closed following a severe pest infestation that resulted in health complications for several children
The first urban primary healthcare center established in the Male' area has been temporarily closed following a severe pest infestation that caused health issues for both staff and pediatric patients. To ensure continuity of care, outpatient consultations have been relocated to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while immunization services have been moved to Dhamanaveshi. Opened last November, the center was designed to provide general medical treatments with a specific focus on pediatric care and mental health services.

The first Urban Primary Healthcare Centre (UPHC) established in the Greater Male' Area to strengthen the public health system has been closed for two days due to a severe pest infestation. It has been learned that the closure follows health complications experienced by several children who sought services at the facility.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), which manages the center, announced last Monday that the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) has been temporarily closed for renovation until Wednesday, April 22, 2026. During this period, outpatient consultations previously offered at the center have been relocated to the IGMH General Outpatient Department (GOPD). Additionally, the hospital stated that vaccination services will be available through Dhamana Veshi.
However, RaajjeMV has learned that the Upper Primary Health Centre (UPHC) was closed due to a worm infestation that hindered the facility's ability to provide services. Reports indicate that several children were affected, suffering from skin rashes and other health complications as a result of the infestation.
Furthermore, reports indicate that IGMH was well aware of significant fungal growth and pest infestations even before the center’s opening. However, the facility was reportedly inaugurated in a rush without these issues being addressed. It is further alleged that no subsequent efforts were made to rectify the situation. The center was ultimately closed only when the health of both children and staff was compromised, leaving the administration with no other choice.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the center during a grand ceremony held on November 19, 2025.
The center's services are primarily divided into three main components.
The center is designed to facilitate consultations with general practitioners and provide streamlined access to specialists for patients requiring further medical advice or advanced care. Additionally, the facility will serve as a hub for national-level public health initiatives and wellness programs.
Through the Child Health Clinic, the center will provide essential services such as monitoring child growth and development, as well as administering vaccinations. Furthermore, the center will offer services aimed at raising awareness of healthy lifestyle habits, alongside specialized clinics for mental health support and tobacco cessation programs.
