The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the police of obstructing its ongoing series of protests and using disproportionate force against demonstrators. According to the party, during a protest on Tuesday night, a participant was struck with an electric baton by a police officer. The individual reportedly suffered a seizure following the assault and was subsequently transported to IGMH for medical treatment.
Even after he collapsed unconscious from being struck with an electric baton, police reportedly obstructed requests to transport him to the hospital. Witnesses stated that he eventually had to be carried on someone's shoulders to an area where a vehicle could be accessed. He was subsequently transported to IGMH in a pickup truck, where he is currently receiving emergency treatment.
In previous protests, participants have sustained various injuries due to the use of disproportionate force by the police. Furthermore, authorities continue to obstruct demonstrations and have been confiscating equipment used by protesters.
