President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has conceded the government's defeat in the local council and Women's Development Committee by-elections, as well as the public referendum, while extending his congratulations to the winning candidates.
According to provisional results, the MDP has secured 205 out of 479 local council seats. Meanwhile, the ruling PNC has obtained 202 seats so far. Additionally, 70 percent of the public has expressed opposition to the proposal of holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.
In a post on X, the President stated that he accepts the results of today’s local council and Women's Development Committee elections, as well as the public referendum, with full respect. He further noted that, with the grace of Almighty Allah, the government will undertake the necessary efforts to address areas requiring improvement, in alignment with the will and sentiments of the people.
Allegations have surfaced regarding the government exerting undue influence and using the threat of job termination in connection with these elections. Furthermore, various parties have filed numerous complaints involving election-related corruption with both the Elections Commission and the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Even in the final lead-up to the election, the government announced numerous job openings. Despite such significant pressures, the MDP has successfully secured victory in the election.
