MDP condemns EC President’s remarks allegedly encouraging voter boycott in Saturday’s elections
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed serious concern over the Elections Commission's decision to issue only the specific ballot paper requested by a voter, alleging that the move could compromise vote secrecy and lead to undue influence over the election. While the opposition party characterized the decision as a measure that discourages electoral participation and undermines the integrity of a fair election, the Commission maintained that the policy was implemented to prevent potential disputes during the voting process.

Abdullah Waheed, the spokesperson appointed by the MDP for the upcoming elections, has condemned remarks made by Elections Commission (EC) President Mohamed Zahid, stating that they encourage voters to abstain from Saturday’s local council and Women’s Development Committee elections, as well as the referendum vote.
Waheed made these remarks following a statement by Elections Commission President Zahid shortly before the polls. Zahid had announced that although three elections are being held simultaneously, voters will only be issued ballot papers for the specific votes they choose to participate in.
In a social media post addressing the matter, Waheed stated that the remarks made by the President of the Elections Commission (EC), which appeared to discourage participation in elections, are unacceptable. He further noted that the Commission has never conducted itself in such a manner during any previous election. Waheed called on the EC to cease such actions immediately.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Waheed further stated that since the election was first announced, the Elections Commission (EC) has been working to manipulate the results in favor of a specific party. He alleged that these actions are a direct attempt to influence the electoral process. Waheed added that such conduct raises serious questions regarding the fairness and integrity of the election.
Speaking at a press conference held with the police on Friday night, Election Commission President Mohamed Zahid stated that if a voter wishes to participate in only one specific election, they will be provided with the ballot paper for that election alone.
However, Zahid stated that if a voter chooses not to use a specific ballot paper, they must declare their decision in the presence of observers. According to Zahid, this procedure is implemented to ensure that all parties are informed, thereby preventing potential issues as the voting process continues.
With Saturday's vote fast approaching, many have expressed concern following the Elections Commission's announcement of this decision. Similar anxieties were raised previously by various parties, who warned that such actions by the Commission could compromise the secrecy of the ballot.
